A holistic approach to health with “One Health”

Human health is inextricably linked to that of animals and the environment. In the One Health approach, experts in veterinary medicine, human medicine, and natural sciences work together to explore and better understand these connections.

Habitats are increasingly interdependent through the world’s steadily population growth and loss of habitat increase the global risk of pathogens passing from animals to humans. HIV, SARS, and most recently Covid-19, have shown the drastic social impact of these so-called zoonotic diseases.

Interdisciplinary cooperation is needed to effectively combat zoonotic diseases, as well as antibiotic resistance and other health risks. The first university-based One Health Institute in Europe was founded to promote research into this important subject.
