The Salomon David Steinberg fund enables PhD candidates in the field of German studies or history at UZH to obtain funding for their research projects. There are two rounds of applications every year.
Salomon David Steinberg was considered one of the few expressionist writers in Switzerland. He was Jewish and studied history, German literature and philosophy in Berlin and at UZH, where he earned a doctoral degree in 1913. He always felt connected to the students of his faculty at UZH, which is why his wife Lea Steinberg-Jacobson established a fund in his name shortly after he died in 1966.
Every year, the fund awards two scholarships worth CHF 20,000 each to promising PhD candidates in the field of literary studies and history at UZH. These are one-off payments that do not include permanent employment with benefits. Printing costs for PhD theses are not covered. Grants are only available to PhD candidates at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the University of Zurich.
Applications need to be submitted to the UZH Foundation by 1 March or 1 September of each year.
