Jonas Birk still feels a strong connection to UZH today. In this interview, the former finance student shares what he particularly valued about his studies and why he remains committed to supporting research at UZH.
Interview: Laura Furlanetto
What experience at UZH has shaped you the most?
The experience of studying itself had a lasting impact on me. Student life is diverse and full of opportunities. I quickly realized how important it is to set priorities independently and structure my time effectively. The ability to manage tasks and time efficiently still helps me today to navigate professional challenges successfully.
What keeps you connected to UZH?
On one hand, the wide range of activities UZH offers, which I can now enjoy with my family—such as events, museums, or the Botanical Garden. On the other hand, my involvement with the UZH Foundation has strengthened my ties to the university. It has allowed me to reconnect with former classmates, which I truly appreciate.
Why do you support «Giving Back» ?
I had an enriching time at UZH, and I am very grateful for that. For me, contributing financially to a well-functioning university in Zurich is a given—UZH plays a vital role in shaping a progressive society. Beyond that, the UZH Foundation team does excellent work, and I want to support their positive spirit.
Donations to «Giving Back» are used where they are most needed. For example, projects on learning disabilities in children and language acquisition in old age have been funded. What do these causes mean to you?
«Giving Back» is about supporting initiatives that may not affect you personally but are crucial for society. I think both of these projects are fantastic—learning and cognitive abilities are fundamental skills for progressing in life. The key question is where donations can have the greatest impact. I trust the UZH Foundation to allocate funds where they are needed most.
What are your hopes for the future of UZH?
UZH has a strong influence and holds its own among the world’s leading universities. I hope it continues to maintain its relevance in society and attracts top talent—whether professors, students, or researchers.
