Large green spaces instead of colorful meadows: Human intervention in nature is leading to disrupted ecosystems, increasing species extinction and the loss of genetic diversity. The University of Zurich is using various research approaches to rethink the loss of biodiversity and its effects.
In Switzerland alone, almost half of all plant and animal species are threatened. It is still unclear exactly how the destabilization of ecosystems affects humans and the environment. This makes it even more important to precisely understand changes in ecosystems and to make this knowledge available to political decision-makers. Only in this way, can we develop solutions and strongly promote habitat biological diversity.
The University of Zurich plays a pioneering role in biodiversity research, for example, in the field of remote sensing with the "ARES" research project. With precise and large-scale images of the earth's surface, the project gathers detailed ecosystem information, in order to develop solutions to preserve our habitats.
